Physical Education

Our school aims to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity and sport in all children. Through high-quality physical education, whole-school values, and a holistic approach, we nurture confident, resilient children who strive for their personal best. We listen to their interests and provide a variety of active experiences and clubs. Our goal is to instill values that encourage children to celebrate their own achievements with humility and appreciate the success of others.

We ensure that our PE curriculum equips all children with the skills and mindset to confidently embrace sporting challenges and active lifestyles beyond primary school. We are committed to educating both children and families on healthy living and making informed lifestyle choices. Prioritising well-being, we support not only physical health but also mental well-being. Through strong partnerships with local clubs and community organisations, we provide children and families with the knowledge and support they need to lead active, healthy lives.

Physical Education in EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and thoughtfully planned provision support children’s physical development through daily playful activities indoors and outdoors.

Children enjoy free-flow play for extended periods, making use of our spacious outdoor environment, including the forest school, mud kitchen, play equipment, and sandpit. This space is accessible year-round in all weather, helping to develop gross and fine motor skills, balance, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, we incorporate meditation, yoga, massage, and relaxation techniques while promoting healthy eating through a variety of nutritious snacks, fostering an early understanding of balanced and healthy lifestyles.

Physical Education in KS1 & KS2

In line with our school curriculum aims, our P.E. curriculum intends to:

  • Ensure that P.E. and sports have a high priority in school and how this contributes to a healthy lifestyle;
  • Give children the opportunities to engage in a range of activities and to enjoy physical activities;
  • Effectively use the whole school day to promote physical activity e.g. lunchtimes and the range of activities available, before and after school opportunities and a daily 10-minute activity;
  • Ensure that the P.E. Curriculum engages all children by providing a wide range of sports and activities that are interesting and accessible to all.

Pupils receive two hours of PE timetabled per week as set out in the National Curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to swim during KS2 and we aim for all pupils leaving the school to be able to swim at least 25 metres. Staff plan and deliver lessons focusing on one of these key areas:

  • Athletics
  • Dance
  • Games – net/wall, striking and fielding, invasion games
  • Gymnastics
  • OAA
  • Swimming

We use Get Set for PE to support our delivery of PE. Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Sports

School Sports

At Castleside Primary School we are extremely proud to be able to take part in a wide range of sports during the academic year. The children have the opportunity to participate in netball, tag rugby, football, cricket, multi-skills, basketball, cheerleading, martial arts, swimming and dance (to name a few!).

Children are given regular opportunity to take part in a range of tournaments and sports festivals both within school, between year groups and with other schools.

In addition to this, thanks to our Lottery Funded all-weather track, we are able to get the children out walking and running every day. We are committed to promoting the benefits of sport and exercise to our children, particularly for good physical and mental health.

Active 30

The Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.

Please see the following link for more information about why we encourage children to be active in school and how you can best support your child at home.
