PSHE
At Castleside Primary, we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning
We include the statutory Relationships and Sex Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme. RSE is life-long learning about physical, moral and emotional development. Children learn about healthy relationships, different families, respect, love and care. In addition, children will be taught age-appropriate information about puberty, hygiene, the body and sexual reproduction.
PSHE in the EYFS
Through Personal, Social, Emotional Development, children are supported to build constructive and respectful relationships that allow them to play, learn and develop alongside both adults and their peers.
As children form friendships, they learn to navigate conflicts and rivalries with adult support. They are encouraged to see themselves as unique and valued individuals. In the Early Years, children are supported in expressing their emotions, with adults modeling healthy ways to manage feelings, helping them develop independence in self-regulation. They also learn to take care of their physical needs while respecting others' privacy. Building resilience is a key focus, with children encouraged to persevere in reaching their goals. Understanding rules and routines is embedded throughout their learning journey, providing a strong foundation for their development.
PSHE in KS1 & KS2
We use the PSHE Association scheme of work to support our curriculum overview. All children have a weekly PSHE/RSHE lesson following 3 key themes across the school year;
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by our Rights Respecting ethos. We are currently a Silver Rights Respecting School.

Relationships and Sex Education
All schools must teach Relationships and Sex Education. As a school we are not introducing compulsory sex education.
We are introducing Relationships Education to put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships of all kinds. Relationships Education is where we want to support the children within our school to be happy, healthy and safe. It is about the understanding of the importance of stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care, for family life. It involves acquiring information, developing skills and forming positive beliefs, values and attitudes.
This is incorporated into our PSHE curriculum and is repeated over the years so that the children can build upon and refine their skills in each area.
