Geography
Children explore, investigate and answer questions in order to gain knowledge and understanding of a given topic, local, national or worldwide. Each topic helps to build upon children’s current knowledge and skills. The teacher plans for cross-curricular links across other subjects such as Art and Design to enhance this learning further. A wide range of visits and visitors support this learning.
Geography in the EYFS
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of geography, people and communities through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World’.
Children learn about features of their own environment such as school, home, community and their city through first-hand experiences and learn how environments may differ through the sharing of books, stories, poems, small world play, role play and visits.
Children enjoy the valuable experiences gained from our regular trips to places within their local community such as the library, park and local shops. Children are given time to discuss, comment and ask questions about what they observe about the world around them and are encouraged to be active learners and explore their interests further.
Geography in KS1 & KS2
In Key Stages 1 and 2, geography lessons ignite children’s curiosity about the world and its people. Pupils explore diverse places, cultures, and environments, both locally and globally. Through engaging activities, they learn to use maps, atlases, and digital resources to investigate landscapes, weather patterns, and human and physical features.
Fieldwork opportunities provide hands-on experiences that bring learning to life. Our geography curriculum encourages children to ask questions, think critically, and understand the impact of human activity on the planet. By developing a sense of responsibility and global awareness, we prepare pupils to become informed and active citizens.
Documents relating to our geography curriculum can be found below. We have taken the aims and objectives from the National Curriculum and used them to create the Castleside Geography Curriculum.
